Origin and Habitat
Native to the states of Hidalgo, Queretaro, and Guanajuato in Mexico. It is difficult to pin down its exact original habitat as it has been extensively cultivated for a long time all over Mexico.
Care requirements
Easy to grow but not frost hardy, prefers warmer environments.
Full sun preferable
60/40 organic/mineral soil mixture
Water well in Spring/Summer, keep reasonably dry in winter
Growth
Vigorous growth once established. Mature plants can grow 50-80cm per year.
In the wild specimens get as tall as 15m in height. In cultivation, the maximum column height is 4-5 metres when planted in the ground.
Height can be restricted by keeping the plant in pots.
