Copiapoa hypogaea is a curious miniature cactus native to the dry coastal regions of Chile. Copiapoa as a genus has an almost cult-like collector fanbase, and hypogaea is a staple in all good ‘poa’ collections.

  • Copiapoa hypogaea is found growing naturally in only one location, near the coastal town of Chañaral in the Atacama desert of Chile.

They can be found growing at the top of low, gravelly coastal hills to the north and south of the town.

  • Like most plants in the Copiapoa genus, hypogaea is native to the Atacama desert–the driest place in the world. In order to survive in this harsh environment these plants have developed extreme adaptations to drought conditions and are highly susceptible to overwatering. It’s particularly important to keep water off their epidermis.

Growing these plants in a greenhouse or similar area where water can be controlled by the grower is highly recommended.

    Plant in a free-draining 90/10 mineral/organic soil mixture.

    Keep fully dry during winter.

  • Copiapoa (koh-pee-ah-poh-ah)

Famous cactus taxonomists Britton and Rose named the genus after the Copiapo, in Chile.

    hypogaea (high-poh-gee-ah)

Hypogaea is the plural form of the Greek word hypogaeum, literally meaning "underground". Comprised of the Greek hypo (under) and ghê (earth). And is in reference to their prostrate growing form and sizeable taproot.
