  • Endemic to Northern Cuba (Matanzas and Las Villas Provinces).

Grows in coastal scrublands on serpentine outcrops among low dry vegetation. This species is Critically Endangered in the wild due to overharvesting and habitat loss due to forestry activities.

  • This cactus is native to a tropical environment and can tolerate (and requires) more water than many other arid cacti species.

Take great care when repotting as this plant can take a long time to recover from root damage.

Prefers a warm environment and will be damaged by temperatures below 8 degrees celsius.

Water once a month in Winter and regularly in Summer.

  • Of all the Melocactus species matanzanus is one of the smallest. It will grow to a maximum height of around 15-20cm and will reach that height quite quickly with good care.
